Minding My Business: Soccer Shots Scores in the South Metro
By Clare Kennedy
You could say Dan Larson is living the dream. He turned his love of a particular sport into a fast-growing company—Soccer Shots of the Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin.
Surveying the scene at Burnsville's River Hills Early Childhood Center, Larson concedes that it's a pretty good gig. Before us about a dozen kindergarten-age kids tussle happily over the ball, squealing and laughing. More than a few loose velcro-strap sneakers go flying as the scrimmage progresses. Grass stains abound. The groups ends the session with a spirited huddle and cheer.
"If you're having a bad day, they'll really brighten you up," Larson says later.
The whole session lasts about 30 minutes, just enough time to give small children a good workout and a few new skills. Brevity is the key to keeping their target age group on track, Larson said. The non-competitive program can be adapted to kids aged two to eight.
"My favorite part is seeing the difference between the first session and the last session and seeing how they've developed," Larson said. "You'll always have a couple of shy kids in each group and by the end they're running around making goals."
Not long ago, Larson's full-time job required a starched shirt and tie.

A program to introduce young children to an active lifestyle is expanding into the west metro.
After operating Soccer Shots in the eastern Twin Cities for the past two years, it’s been growing quickly, owner Dan Larson said.
Rather than offering classes at one location, they partner with day cares, preschools, park programs and summer camps to teach their classes for ages 2-8 at the different facilities. They operate at 55 schools in the metro.
The focus is on introducing children to soccer at the basic level through the playing of games. The kids are excited to play the games and use their imagination, he said. It’s a way to show kids how to “be active and have fun while being active and healthy,” he said.
It also provides convenience to parents who then don’t have to drive their children to soccer lessons.
Soccer Shots was a perfect fit for Larson, who has been playing soccer all his life. He played for Armstrong High School before going on to play for Hamline University. After college, he had coached for a few years while living in Wisconsin, volunteering his time after work like most coaches, he said.

Early lessons: Soccer program designed to build character

Parents looking to help their young children develop character and learn social skills will soon have a new option. McKinney resident Deb Mathis will begin offering Soccer Shots to residents in the east side of Dallas County.
"I bought my franchise in March and expect to start offering the course in June," Mathis said. "I am really excited about the next couple of weeks. I will spend the next month in the cities getting to know people."
Mathis said she became exposed to the Soccer Shots program while coaching her daughter's soccer team at a park in McKinney.
"There was a man there on the field and he was being very vibrant and enthusiastic. We had to move our team away from him because I was having trouble keeping their attention as they were all looking at him. I noticed he was working from a curriculum. What he was doing on the field could best be described as 'organized chaos.' The kids were having a blast."
Mathis said she would learn later he was a Soccer Shots coach. At that point she contacted him and after interviewing, she began coaching classes for the program.

Soccer Shots Partners With Woodbury Preschools
Soccer Shots Partners With Woodbury Preschools
The company looks to promote healthy lifestyles among youth and provide an extracurricular activity for schools.
A new youth soccer franchise has partnered with four Woodbury preschools in attempt to bring an extracurricular activity to the schools and introduce the game to children.
Soccer Shots is working with Primrose School of Woodbury, Saint Ambrose, Woodbury Preschool Programs on Steepleview and Woodbury Lutheran for summer programs, said Dan Larson, owner of the local franchise.
Soccer shots works with kids 2-8 years old during once-a-week 30-minute sessions, he said. In addition to teaching the basics of the sport, the company tries to “use soccer as a vehicle to teach healthy habits to kids,” Larson said.
“And it’s a way for the school to offer an extracurricular that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to,” he said.
Summer camps at Woodbury parks are also in the works, said Larson, who played soccer in high school and at Hamline University in St. Paul, and also coached youngsters for a few years.
Soccer Shots, he said, is “a way to positively impact the community with something that I know.”
